License-exempt Home Providers
A license-exempt home child care business is typically operated by one individual who provides care for a small group of children in either their home or the home of a child(ren). These providers often build strong bonds with the children in their care due to the group size. This type of care can be especially helpful for parents with non-traditional hours.
A license-exempt home child care provider is someone who cares for children without a requirement to be licensed by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). This is often a family member, friend, or neighbor of a parent.
License-exempt home child care providers may care for up to three children, including their own, unless all the additional children are from one household. All children under the age of 13 in the provider's household are counted, even if they are not present at the time (e.g., they are at school).
See Rule 377: Facilities and Programs Exempt from Licensure under the Forms/Rules tab at https://sunshine.dcfs.illinois.gov/Content/Licensing/Welcome.aspx
